Life in Canberra, if any?

Friday, 27 April 2012, 7:51 PM.

It’s Friday night, the time that most people in Australia spent for hangout—weekend started at Friday night they say. And me alone in my room, facing this damn old laptop listening to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”. What am I doing here?

Life in Canberra is kind of an anticlimax experience for me. Having previous one year of exciting and enjoying life in Melbourne, moving to Canberra is less than my expectation. Don’t get me wrong, the campus is great, new friends are wonderful, and for someone who just moved to a new place the transition is objectively smooth. So what’s wrong?

Well, to me it’s not about right or wrong. It’s just seems to me that all my energy have been spent on exploring all the wonderful first year in Australia (plus New Zealand of course!). So when the time come for me to move to this capital city of Australia, I don’t have much energy left. Well at least I don’t find something that can recharge my energy here.

Imagine yourself coming for the first time in Australia, you’re flooded by expectations, fears, hopes and excitements on how things are going to work here. Simple things like using public transport for the first time might make you nauseated! After some time, weeks or months, you’d then adjusted to the new life. And after a year, you basically know how things work in Australia. So when you moved to another city, all those expectations, fears, hopes and excitements might have diminished.

To me, the city itself is also quite boring. You basically don’t have many options for night life, with the exception of going to a bar you’d probably ended with staying at your home. The probability of catching public transport after 6 PM is near to the probability of finding a javanese rhino crossing your garden. Lucky if you’re staying on-campus, for at least you still have many friends to socialise. If I came to Canberra at first place instead of Melbourne, I might have the energy to explore all the unexplored life in this city, no matter how boring this city is. Yes, might.

Well, to spark a bit of optimism, this year is—hopefully, fingers crossed—my last year in Australia. Should everything went well, I’ll be back in Indonesia at the end of this year or early next year. That thought should boost my energy to explore everything in Australia, Canberra at the very least, while time permitted. To get started, I’m starting to use again my analog camera, after an almost one year of not shooting using my rangefinder, trying to spent all my films stock. So, let’s go out and explore then!
